Hello folks,

Some students have e-mailed and posted their wish to visit their old classroom today sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Our principal, Mr. Cruz, says that is fine as long as you send me an e-mail at rpalassou@pleasanton.k12.ca.us so we can forward your name to the office for you to sign in. Mr. Cruz also asks that if you visit you are given permission to be in room 28, and he asks you not wander around the campus unsupervised. Thank you.

Note from Mr. Palassou: The winds were too high to launch, in retrospect, and the maximum strength line allowed by the federal government broke as the wind whipped the balloon about. Off it went into the sky.

We try our final attempt to launch in 45 minutes. Full of anticipation, excitement and hope that our payload, including some microbial soil crusts collected by a NASA scientist, will fly! Winds are much calmer this morning, the moon is setting, and in the west a planer arises.

Here are some notes from the students about yesterday:

Hi we are having so much fun here! Our first balloon launch was unsuccessful; it got away! We are having lots of adventures, seeing amazing things. See you Weds. -Lauren

Cross your fingers that the extra balloon won't get away from us again! Winds are crazy at night, we almost got blown off a bluff!

HI! We, the advance group went on dirt roads that were tilted and drove for two hours but could not track the first launch attempt. Hopefully tommorow we will succeed.

As I write this, fifth-grade students from Valley View's Science Club are pre-flighting the DREAMS-11 balloon for tomorrow morning's flight, and building a mylar rotation inhibitor in the hope of receiving better GPS signals while chase teams are tracking the flight.

NASA'S SHUTTLE DISCOVERY HEADS TO STATION AFTER PREDAWN LAUNCH

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Space shuttle Discovery lit up Florida's Space
Coast sky about 45 minutes before sunrise Monday with a 6:21 a.m. EDT
launch from NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The launch began a 13-day
flight to the International Space Station and the second of five
shuttle missions planned for 2010. (Three more shuttle missions until the fleet is retired. ;-(
Bummer.)

Crew members are Commander Alan Poindexter, Pilot Jim Dutton and Mission
Specialists Rick Mastracchio, Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, Stephanie
Wilson, Clay Anderson and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency
astronaut Naoko Yamazaki.

Lindenburger will be the last of three teachers selected as mission
specialists in the 2004 Educator-Astronaut class to fly on the
shuttle. The educational activities on the STS-131 mission will focus
on robotics and promoting careers in science, technology, engineering

Statement from Buzz Aldrin: A New Direction in Space

Today I wish to endorse strongly the President’s new direction for NASA. As an Apollo astronaut, I know the importance of always pushing new frontiers as we explore space. The truth is, that we have already been to the Moon – some 40 years ago. A near-term focus on lowering the cost of access to space and on developing key, cutting-edge technologies to take us further, faster, is just what our Nation needs to maintain its position as the leader in space exploration for the rest of this century. We need to be in this for the long haul, and this program will allow us to again be pushing the boundaries to achieve new and challenging things beyond Earth. I hope NASA will embrace this new direction as much as I do, and help us all continue to use space exploration to drive prosperity and innovation right here on Earth.
I also believe the steps we will be taking following the President’s direction will best position NASA and other space agencies to send humans to Mars and other exciting destinations as quickly as possible. To do that, we will need to support many types of game-changing technologies NASA and its partners will be developing. Mars is the next frontier for humankind, and NASA will be leading the way there if we aggressively support the President’s plans.
Finally, I am excited to think that the development of commercial capabilities to send humans into low earth orbit will likely result in so many more earthlings being able to experience the transformative power of spaceflight. I can personally attest to the fact that the experience results in a different perspective on life on Earth, and on our future as a species. I applaud the President for working to make this dream a reality.

After serving 15 galactic months on board the International Space Station (ISS), Disney Parks and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) today announced they are celebrating Buzz Lightyear’s historic space journey with a Mission Patch Design Challenge for children 6-12 years of age in the 50 United States and District of Columbia at [ http://www.disneyparks.com/Buzz ]www.DisneyParks.com/Buzz. The 12-inch action figure returned to Earth in September aboard NASA space shuttle Discovery mission STS-128.

For nearly 40 years, NASA astronauts have designed patches to symbolize their individual space missions and flight accomplishments. Carrying on this tradition, Disney Parks and NASA have launched a search for the most creative mission patch design to honor Buzz Lightyear as America’s first and longest serving space ranger.

Now through Nov. 6, children and parents can go online and download materials to design a custom Buzz mission patch. Kids can choose design templates and art work inspired by previous NASA badges as well as NASA and Disney Parks creative elements and other fun add-ons. Along with their patch, children must also submit a brief essay (up to 100 words) discussing the inspiration for their design. The winner, parent and two guests will receive a three day, two night vacation to Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. as well as a VIP tour of the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla.

The Mission Patch Design Challenge commemorates Buzz Lightyear’s achievement and builds on NASA’s educational goals of encouraging students to pursue studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. As part of the Buzz Lightyear Mission Patch Design Challenge, children will get the opportunity to learn about the requirements of space flight and the science surrounding NASA programs, helping to create a strong understanding about the importance of space exploration.

“Now that Buzz Lightyear is back home, we are truly excited for the next phase – designing a real NASA mission patch to recognize his historic accomplishment,” said Disney’s Duncan Wardle, Vice President, Disney Destinations. “Disney Parks and NASA feel it’s only fitting that Buzz’s biggest and true fans are given the opportunity to design a one-of-a-kind mission patch to celebrate his dream-come-true. We have no doubt the submissions will be unique and creative – if anything, a very hard decision to make!”

I think Lance Armstrong’s quote means that pain doesn’t last long, but quitting stays with you forever. Quitting is something you try not to do in your life. Pain can go away, if you take good care of yourself. Therefore, I think Lance Armstrong’s quote means that quitting stays with you forever, but pain doesn’t last long. – Emily

I think what Lance Armstrong is trying to say is that if you quit, it will stay with you for the rest of your life, and in life there is no rewinding. But if you don’t quit, it may hurt. But it will always end or go away sooner or later. So never quit or give up. – Alex

Pain or quit? If you get hurt it will eventually go away, but if you quit before you have a chance to get hurt it will be with you forever. I think this because pain will always leave you, and if you quit it will be in your heart forever. Since pain will leave you it is smarter to keep going and get hurt - not too hurt - and not quit. Pain hurts and we might hurt for a while, but we don’t hurt forever. When we quit something, it sticks right with us forever. Being kicked doesn’t feel like a broken bone, and it doesn’t hurt forever but quitting is a loss you can never take back’’, that’s what I thought the quote meant. If I lose my football or baseball game it’s not the end of the world. We can beat them next time. I won’t be hurt forever. Lance Armstrong was trying to send a message that if you are struggling it will eventually go away, but if you quit it will stay with you forever. If you are struggling to hit the ball in baseball, that struggle will go away, but when you quit that quit will stay with you forever. If you are struggling, keep trying, but never. -Chase

I learned about planetexplore.com in the S.F. Chronicle last weekend. Here's part of what sports writer Tom Stienstra wrote:

"PlanetExplore (planetexplore.com) is an online community designed as a hub to increase access to outdoor activities and events. The Bay Area is the first region to be activated, with sites for Denver and New York expected by early winter. Facebook users can log in using their Facebook user name and password.

Initially, the site is set up as a bulletin board to post outdoor events and activities, and as a place for outdoor participants to connect with each other. Steven Rendle, president of the North Face, said he hopes the site will 'help develop the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts and conservationists.'

As part of PlanetExplore, the North Face is partnering with Outward Bound, Sierra Club, American Hiking Society, Bay Area Wilderness Training and other groups in an effort to get youth attracted to the site.

Richard Louv, author of the landmark book, "Last Child in the Woods," is supporting PlanetExplore.

'It's important that children learn to connect with nature and the outdoors at an early age as a growing body of evidence indicates that children who participate in unstructured outdoor activities are healthier, happier, and better learners, and these assets can carry into adulthood,' Louv said."

We just returned from Outdoor School. Your children LOVED it! Most want to go there again. NASA SELECTS TARGET CRATER FOR LUNAR IMPACT OF LCROSS SPACECRAFT

MOFFETT FIELD, Calif.

NASA has identified the spot where it will
search for water on the moon. Reporters are invited to attend the
announcement of the target location where the Lunar Crater
Observation and Sensing Satellite, or LCROSS, and its spent Centaur
rocket will hit in October. The briefing will take place at 10 a.m.
PDT, Friday, Sept. 11, in the main auditorium, Building N201, of
NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. The event will
be broadcast live on NASA Television and the agency's Web site.
